CDTI – NEDO Workshop: “The Offshore Wind Energy Generation Technology”

Conference organised by the Basque Energy Cluster, together with CDTI, NEDO and JWPA, on a reverse Japanese misision to Spain.

During the 2nd of July, a workshop was held at the Palacio Euskalduna in Bilbao. The event was carried out with the cooperation of the Japan Wind Power Association and the Basque Energy Cluster to provide lectures on the current conditions and future prospects for the development of offshore wind energy technologies in both countries. It was attended by 40 participants from 25 Japanese companies and 120 participants from 60 Spanish companies. Spain and Japan are both seafaring countries with many interests in common with regard to the future expansion of offshore wind power generation. The workshop provided an opportunity for a lively exchange of views between the two countries.

The Opening session was run by Javier Zarraonandia, Deputy Minister of Industry and Energy of the Basque Government, Luis González  Souto, Deputy Directorate of Technological Cooperation of CDT and Katsushi Takeiro, International Director of Foreing Affairs of NEDO. The journey took place within the calendar of events of the 150 Anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Spain and Japan.

NAUTILUS Floating Solutions had the opportunity to attend the workshop and present as programmed “New designs and concepts”, NAUTILUS: “An efficient Floating Foundation for Offshore Wind”. The presentation was run by Jesús M. Busturia, NAUTILUS Floating Solutions’ Managing Director. Afterwards, Japanese representatives visited our stand interested in Nautilus’s technology.

Friday, 6th of July, industrial and scientific representatives of Japan, together with the Canary Government, local companies and NAUTILUS Floating Solutions, took part in a workshop focused on Offshore Wind Energy in PLOCAN, a testing area of 23square kms, where various prototypes have been tested, highlighting the presence of the first offshore wind turbine in Spain.

The aim of these workshops is that representatives of the Japanese companies know better the capacities of the Spanish industry and identify the challenges that could be tackled together. Japan is one of the countries with significant forecasts growth for the offshore wind market in short-medium term, with a special interest in its floating version for deep water.
